Which
Finance Qualification Actually Gets You Abroad?
CFA
vs ACCA vs CA vs CPA vs FRM for India → UK / Canada (2026)
The honest, numbers-first guide
to which credential opens which door, what you’d actually earn after tax and
rent, and whether migrating is worth it at all.
If you’re an Indian finance
professional or student, the question underneath “should I move abroad?” is
really “which qualification gets me there, and is it worth it once I arrive?”
Those are different questions, and the answer depends heavily on which
credential you hold. A CFA charter travels the world untouched. An Indian
CA does not. Getting this wrong can cost you years and a five-figure
requalification bill.
This guide compares the five
credentials PCC members most often hold — CFA, ACCA, CA (ICAI), US CPA, and FRM
— across the two most common migration targets, the UK and Canada. For each, we
look at the four things that actually decide the outcome: does it transfer,
what you’d earn, what you keep after tax and rent, and the visa route.
|
The one-line answer Migrating usually raises your absolute income and
career ceiling, but not always your real, cost-of-living-adjusted standard of
living — especially in London, Toronto, and Vancouver. The credential you
hold decides how smooth the path is: CFA and FRM travel free, ACCA travels
well (with a Canada catch), and CA needs a bridge first. |
1. Start here: will your
qualification even transfer?
This is the section most salary
articles bury, and it’s the one that should come first. A £60k UK salary is
irrelevant if you can’t legally practise there without requalifying.

CFA and FRM — the free
travellers
Both are single-body global
designations (CFA Institute; GARP). The charter you earn in Mumbai is the exact
one recognised in London and Toronto — no conversion, no extra exams. If global
mobility is your primary goal, these are the lowest-friction credentials you
can hold.
ACCA — travels well, with a
Canada asterisk
•
UK: full
recognition. ACCA is one of the three major UK accountancy bodies and
recognised by UK regulators. This is the smoothest accounting migration path to
Britain.
•
Canada: the ACCA–CPA Canada mutual recognition agreement expired in
April 2021 and hasn’t been renewed. ACCA is still respected by multinational
and Big 4 employers, and provincial CPA bodies accept ACCA study toward their
educational requirements — but for a licensed Canadian accounting career you
complete the CPA Canada route. Plan for top-up modules.
US CPA — strong for MNC roles,
not a Canadian licence
The US CPA is valued by
multinational employers and Big 4 offices in 100+ jurisdictions, and it’s a
strong credential for GCC and MNC finance roles. But note: US CPA and CPA
Canada are different bodies. It opens corporate doors, not automatic Canadian
licensure.
CA (ICAI) — the domestic gold
standard that doesn’t travel
The Indian CA carries statutory
audit rights inside India that no foreign body has — but that authority stops
at the border. Abroad it has very limited direct recognition and usually
requires additional qualifications. The common route: use ACCA (a qualified CA
can claim up to nine exemptions), US CPA, or a UK ACA pathway as a bridge, then
migrate. If you’re a CA planning to move, budget for this before you go.

3. Gross is a trap — tax and
cost of living
A bigger salary in a higher-tax,
higher-rent city can leave you worse off. Two things quietly erase the raise:
tax and housing.
Effective tax, 2026
•
India: new regime tops ~30% + cess; effective ~25–28% at higher
incomes.
•
UK: 20/40/45%
bands + National Insurance; VAT 20%.
•
Canada: combined federal + provincial ~26–32% at C$80–100k, ~38%+ above
C$150k, plus CPP/EI (~6–7%) — but public healthcare is bundled in.
Cost of living
•
London is dramatically more expensive than any Canadian city
except Vancouver and central Toronto.
•
In
Toronto and Vancouver, rent alone can eat 40–50% of median take-home — the
number new arrivals most underestimate.
•
Secondary cities flip the maths: Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal,
Halifax offer far better salary-to-cost ratios. Alberta has no provincial sales
tax.
|
The city matters more than the country A finance professional on C$85k in Calgary can be
better off than one on C$95k in Toronto once rent is counted. “Should I move
to Canada?” is the wrong question. “Which city, at what salary, with what
rent?” is the right one. |
4. So which one should you pick?

The trade-offs, honestly
•
For migration: higher absolute pay, higher ceiling, global optionality, and (in
Canada) bundled healthcare and social benefits.
•
Against, or for waiting: cost-of-living erosion in top cities, requalification cost for
CAs (and ACCAs to Canada), higher effective tax in Canada, and a real
first-year financial drag most people underestimate.
|
How to actually decide Don’t compare gross salaries. Compare (net after tax)
minus (annual rent + living costs) in the specific city you’d move to,
against the same figure for your current Indian city — then subtract what
requalification will cost you in time and money. If the adjusted numbers are
close, migrate for the ceiling and optionality, not for month-one savings. |
5. Where to start prepping
The cheapest mistake to avoid is
paying for the wrong path. Before you commit money to a credential, it’s worth
actually trying the material — CFA question types feel nothing like ACCA
papers, and FRM is different again.
Professional Career Club has
free practice question banks for all five credentials in this guide — CFA,
ACCA, CPA, CA, and FRM — plus CTP, with step-by-step explanations and a
community forum where people share exactly the kind of “should I move abroad?”
experience this article is about. You can try questions from any of them before
deciding which path fits your goal. No payment at any stage.
|
The bottom line Migrating in 2026 is usually worth it for career
growth and global optionality — and often a wash for immediate savings,
especially in expensive cities. The credential you hold changes everything:
CFA and FRM travel free, ACCA travels well (mind the Canada catch), and
Indian CA needs a bridge before it counts abroad. Run the city-specific,
after-tax, after-rent maths before you commit. |
