American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA)

The premier credential for accounting professionals in the US

Course Overview

American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (CPA)

Globally Recognised · Self-Paced

The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) licence is the benchmark accounting credential in the United States. The Uniform CPA Examination is set by the AICPA and administered with NASBA, but the licence itself is granted by an individual State Board of Accountancy. That distinction matters more than most candidates expect: the board, not the AICPA, decides your education, experience and residency requirements.

The Core-plus-Discipline structure. Every candidate passes four sections totalling 16 hours — three Core sections that everyone takes, plus one Discipline section of their choosing:

All four sections count equally toward the licence, and the Discipline you choose does not restrict what you can practise once licensed.

How it is scored. You need a 75 in every section, and that is not a percentage. AICPA reports on a 0–99 scale and states plainly that scores "do not represent a percentage correct" — 75 is a scaled score. Each section splits its weighting between multiple-choice questions and task-based simulations: 50% MCQ and 50% TBS for AUD, FAR, REG, BAR and TCP, and 60% MCQ and 40% TBS for ISC.

Recent pass rates. AICPA's published rates for 2026 Q2 were AUD 49.38%, FAR 42.47%, REG 66.87%, BAR 45.62%, ISC 67.98% and TCP 79.75%. FAR is the hardest section by a clear margin and is usually worth attacking while your study momentum is highest. AICPA also notes that a rise in pass rates reflects better-prepared candidates rather than an easier exam, since section difficulty is held constant.

When you can sit. The CPA Exam runs on continuous testing — candidates may take it year-round, subject to the opening hours and capacity of individual test centres.

Credit validity and eligibility. This is the part with no single answer, and the part candidates most often get wrong. NASBA is explicit that education, experience and residency requirements vary by jurisdiction, and that your State Board of Accountancy determines whether exam credit is granted and how long that credit stays valid. Check your own board before you decide a sitting order, because the length of the credit window is what turns section sequencing into a real decision rather than a preference.

What is changing. AICPA and NASBA are moving the CPA Exam onto a new delivery platform in 2027. Testing pauses for an 11-day blackout from 1 to 11 July 2027 and resumes on the new platform on 12 July 2027. Score releases are expected to be slower than usual for roughly twelve months after the switch, so anyone planning a 2027 sitting should leave extra slack in their 30-month credit window instead of assuming the current turnaround. Read the full CPA 2027 update.

At Professional Career Club you can work through free CPA practice questions with full explanations, discuss sections in the community forum, and follow official CPA exam news — no payment at any stage.

CPA 2027 exam dates and the July platform change

The CPA Exam runs on continuous testing — there is no application deadline and no fixed sitting date. You apply, receive a Notice to Schedule, and book a seat.

One blackout in 2027: no CPA Exam testing takes place from 1 to 11 July 2027. Testing resumes on 12 July 2027 on a new delivery platform, and score release is disrupted for roughly twelve months afterwards. Scores for sections taken after the change take longer to arrive than they do today.

If you need a score by a particular date in the second half of 2027, sit before the blackout rather than after it.

CPA 2027 score release dates for Core sections

Core sections are AUD, FAR and REG.

  • Test by 23 January 2027 — score released 9 February 2027

CPA 2027 exam fees

There is no single national CPA fee. Each state board sets its own application and section fees, so the figure that applies to you depends on the board you apply through.

  • New York — USD 268.59 per exam section (the section fee is the same nationwide; NY additionally charges about USD 96 each for education evaluation and exam application)
  • Ohio — USD 268.59 per exam section application
  • Testing outside the United States — adds an international administration fee of USD 390 per section
  • Testing in India — adds an international administration fee of USD 460 per section

Check the fee schedule published by your own state board before budgeting — the two examples above show how wide the range is.

Everything you need to know

Why should you pursue CPA?

•     The only credential legally required to sign audit reports in the United States — a non-negotiable for US public accounting practice.

•     Recognised and actively sought by Big Four firms, the Fortune 500, government agencies, and US-headquartered multinationals globally.

•     Mastery of US GAAP is a differentiator for anyone working with US-listed companies, SEC filings, or US investors — regardless of country of work.

•     CPAs earn significantly more than non-licensed accountants: average CPA salary is $92,795/year in the US vs. $61,480 for non-licensed accountants.

•     2026 update: AICPA and NASBA have approved a new Bachelor's + 2-year experience pathway as an alternative to the traditional 150 credit-hour requirement, making it more accessible.

When is the CPA exam schedule for 2026?

The CPA Exam has no single annual schedule – but Core and Discipline sections work differently, and the whole system changes in July 2027.

Core sections (AUD, FAR, REG) are on continuous testing: you can schedule them at any time of year, and scores are released on a rolling cycle roughly two weeks after your test data is processed.

Discipline sections (BAR, ISC, TCP) are not continuous. They are administered only in the first month of each quarter:

Discipline testing periodScore release
1–31 October 202615 December 2026
1–31 January 202716 March 2027
1–30 April 20279 June 2027

From July 2027 the exam moves to a new platform, and Core sections switch to quarterly windows too:

SectionTesting windowScore release
Core12 July – 30 September 202719 October 2027
Core1 October – 15 December 202728 December 2027
Discipline12 July – 12 August 202728 September 2027
Discipline1–31 October 202717 December 2027

If you are planning a 2027 attempt, this matters: the flexibility of booking a Core section any week disappears in July 2027.

You must pass all four sections within 30 months of the date your score is released for the first section you pass (UAA Model Rule 5-7, where the jurisdiction has adopted it). Some states allow up to three years – check your own state board, since the window is set by them and not by AICPA.

Testing is at Prometric centres. AICPA notes that all dates are subject to change.

What are the rules for rescheduling CPA?

•     Rescheduling at Prometric: You can reschedule or cancel your Prometric appointment free of charge if you do it at least 61 days beforehand. Within 30 days: a fee may apply. Within 24 hours: no refund.

•     NTS Expiry: If your NTS expires before you sit the exam, you forfeit the exam fees and must re-apply and re-pay. Always sit before your NTS expiry.

•     Section retake: No waiting period between attempts. Re-apply to your state board and receive a new NTS to resit a failed section.

•     30-month clock: Your 30-month window to pass all sections begins when you pass your first section. If you don't complete all sections in time, you lose the credit for sections passed more than 30 months ago.

What scholarship options are available for CPA?

•     AICPA Foundation Scholarship: Awards up to $10,000 (AICPA Foundation Scholarship for Future CPAs); ~$5,000 is the average award across programs. Requires AICPA student member status. Source: aicpa-cima.com/scholarships

•     State CPA Society Scholarships: Most US state CPA societies offer annual scholarships ($1,000–$5,000) to accounting students. Check your state society website.

•     NASBA CPA Exam Scholarship: NASBA periodically offers exam fee assistance to qualifying candidates. Check nasba.org

•     University Scholarships: Many US universities with strong accounting programmes offer CPA exam fee support to graduating seniors. Ask your academic advisor.

What does it mean to be a Certified CPA?

A CPA is a Certified Public Accountant licensed by a US State Board of Accountancy. This is the distinction most candidates miss: the AICPA writes the Uniform CPA Examination and NASBA helps administer it, but neither of them licenses you. Your state board does.

To be certified you generally need all three of the following, in whatever form your own jurisdiction defines them:

  • Pass the exam — all four sections (three Core plus one Discipline) with a score of at least 75 in each.
  • Meet the education requirement set by your state board.
  • Meet the experience requirement, and any ethics requirement your board imposes.

Because the licence is granted by state, the details vary: education, experience, residency, and how long your exam credit stays valid are all determined by your board rather than by the AICPA. Passing all four sections makes you exam-complete; it does not by itself make you a CPA.

Check your own jurisdiction through NASBA and your state board before assuming any requirement applies to you.

Where can I find free CPA practice questions?

Professional Career Club offers around 2,900 free CPA practice questions with step-by-step explanations. You can answer a question and read the full explanation before creating an account; a free account (email or Google sign-in) unlocks the rest of the question bank and the CPA community forum. No payment is required at any stage.

Start here: Free CPA practice questions.

One note on how to use them. The CPA is scored on a scaled 0–99 range where 75 is the pass mark, and AICPA is explicit that a score is not a percentage correct. That means you cannot read your readiness straight off a practice percentage — what practice questions are genuinely good for is finding the topics you get wrong, and building the habit of working under time pressure.
